Ken Upchurch was first elected to the state legislature in 1998 to represent House District 52. During his tenure, he would be elected twice as minority whip, and unsuccessfully sought the republican nomination for state treasurer. He would serve in the state house until 2010 when he chose to run for Judge-Executive of Wayne County, a race in which he would be unsuccessful. However, he would be reelected to his former state house seat in 2012 following his successor's election to the state senate.
He continues to serve as a state representative today.
In 2000, Upchurch also spearheaded a donor revolt due to the controversial ousting of longtime Student Association advisor, Dr. Tom Myers, from both his advisor position and as Vice President of Student Affairs.
