Kristina O'Brien was the first non-traditional student elected as Student Body President at EKU. When she began attending EKU, it was ten years after her high school graduation, during that time she had been married twice and had three children. She began attending EKU's Danville Regional Campus, and achieved an associate degree in computer technology on an expediate timeline before seeking her bachelors in physics from the primary Richmond campus. Her and her husband relocated to Richmond, and her husband soon after also enrolled in classes. During her time at EKU, she was selected for NASA summer training as well as to be one of thirty representative of the United States at the 2003 International Aeronautical Congress (IAC) in Germany. She also worked as a research assistant for a professor in EKU's Physics Department.
